Back to School Celebrations

Like I have said time and time again, I love a reason to have a party, invite people over, have a cake and just celebrate. Yesterday was main man’s first day of Kindergarten at Bedford Road School in Pleasantville. Although it was only 35 min, not really a day, it was the 1st official one. I  took the day off to be home with him. We went to the library in the morning, went out for a special lunch , took Nicky to the grocery to pick out lunch box snacks and just spent some us time. A day like this is really a celebration in itself when you are a full-time working mom.

When daddy and everyone else got home from work, we had family dinner for Nicholas and my niece Sammi who is entering 11th grade.  The 2 “kids” decided what they wanted for dinner. They decided on Kentucky Fried Chicken, but wanted homemade sides. The kids were very specific of what they wanted. Crinkle cut fresh cut fries, apple slices, corn and salad. For dessert, the celebration cake from the Pastry Corner with chocolate cake , Oreo mousse and whipped creme frosting.

When Sammi came home from Soccer practice her and Nicholas decided since it was their day, they get to sit at the head of the table, which they did. The table had everything they requested and a fun conversation on everyone’s day was had.

When I had mentioned to someone that we were having back to school dinner and cake , they looked at my like I was crazy. Maybe I am, but it’s all about creating memories for main man that he will have forever, because I know someday in the future, dinners like this will be far and few between, but I do hope when his children start Kindergarten the tradition will carry on.

What traditions are in  your family  to celebrate Back to School?

Is It Me? Boxed CUPCAKE mix

We are a cupcake house. We enjoy making cupcakes to bring to friends’ houses, parties, school lunches or an after dinner dessert. We often make them just because.

We prefer to make them from scratch they are lighter, fluffier and just taste better. When in a bind or when main man has a friend over and they want to make them, we use box mixes. The last few times we have made them from a box I noticed we didn’t get the 24 per box as stated.

The first couple of times this happened, I thought hmmmm is it me? Then this past weekend we made them for a Labor Day party, and guess what — we barely got 18 from the box.  We don’t over fill, but I do like a fluffy cupcake. If I wanted minis I would make minis.

Makes you wonder are they making the packages smaller for the same money? Are they wanting you to double your recipe so that you purchase more boxes? I personally think all of the above!

What are your feelings and experiences about cupcakes? If you make them from scratch please share your recipe with us!

Land of the Free Home of the Brave

With today being Labor Day, many feel it is about the end of summer; the celebration of economic and social contributions of workers; maybe another day for more retail sales or a rare Monday off. I tend to place Labor day with Memorial Day and July 4th . To me it is about the many men and women who fight for our freedom everyday.

I personally have a special place in my heart for those protecting our future and serving our country. A close friend of mine was a Marine mom at a young age, everyday I would await her Facebook status to make sure Pat was doing ok. When donations were needed for gifts to send holiday bags of cheer to his Marine Corp, we always made a donation.

Main Street Pediatric Dentistry, where I am office manager, held a Halloween candy buyback for the past 4 years collecting candy from children and paying them $1.00 a pound. We would ask the children to write cards, send pictures or even gifts to our soldiers overseas.

Last Halloween my boss’s son was over in Afghanistan, so we decided that was where all 1400 lbs collected along with hand knitted skull caps and cards would be sent. James (boss’s son) came home around Christmas and was so happy with all the goodies he received.

This past week while at a New York Yankee game with my main men, we were fortunate enough to sit in front of a US Sergeant. James (just met him) immediately took a liking to Nicholas, I think primarily because Nicholas was sporting a haircut similar to his. During the game, James, his brother Mike and his friends kept talking to Nicholas and  picked him up and high-fived him after a Swisher home run.  Nicholas was part of their crew for the night. Nicholas mentioned to James that we had said he could get a Yankee hat at the end of the game and before we knew it James was back with a new hat for himself and for Nicholas. He then signed his name on the inside and asked Nicholas to do the same in his.

The rest of the night was all about Jimmy and Nicky building a relationship. Jimmy told Nick he was a Sergeant in the US ARMY and that this coming week he was being sent to Korea. Nicholas, knowing our other friend James, started telling Jimmy about him and how we sent him candy. That this year since our other James was home we would send him our candy.

As the game was coming to an end the boys made plans for when Jimmy’s tour would be over. We exchanged emails, information and Jimmy’s brother Mike promised to keep us up to date on where to send treats to over the next year. Before we left Nicholas had a Bravery Bracelet on, he took it off handed it to James and asked him to wear it to keep himself happy while he was in Korea. We plan on keeping in touch and look forward to another Yankee game together. It is a week later and Nicholas is still telling everyone about “his soldier” and wears his hat proudly wherever we go. He even sleeps with it next to his bed.

So this Labor Day while we look forward to spending family time together, the last days at the pool and enjoying another BBQ, we should all take a moment and remember without the Labor of those fighting for our  economic, social and retail shopping freedom the Monday off would not be possible.
