Advanced Auto Parts Monster Jam Let’s Chat with Bill Baukmann Driver of Shockwave
Bill Braukmann Driver of ShockWave
Last week I was fortunate enough to provide my readers with a chance to win tickets to Monster Jam. Yesterday morning I had an amazing time being able to chat one on one with the great driver of Shockwave Bill Braukmann
Bill Braukmann interviewed by Lynda Lederer-Natale
Lynda: Bill tell me how you got involved in Monster Truck, was it a life long dream? Bill: It was actually a midlife crisis it was either I get an earring , grow out my hair and get a girlfriend or drive a monster truck I chose the later, although I think it might have been cheaper the other way. Being self employed it was easy for me to continue to work and follow midlife where it took me.
Lynda: I am sure your family is happy you chose this form of midlife crisis? Bill: Yes my wife Kim , my 19 year old daughter Jessica and my 17 year old son Billy are all very happy and are involved in it as well. They travel with me and it is a family operation, my 24 year old nephew even works on my crew. We travel in a motor home so our dog can come to, but the camera is always on us!
Lynda: Since both children will be driving in 2014 , how does Kim feel about them driving? Bill: She is comfortable with it, they grew up around Monster Trucks and it is part of the family business. For my children it is 10 minutes of fame, we have another truck we are working on which will come out in 2014 the same year both Jessica and Billy will start drive. We also have a reality show coming out based on our family and the Truck it’s a great ego boost, but I always remind my kids that you can’t forget what you have to do come Monday morning.
Lynda: Can you give any advise to someone who might want to get into Monster Trucks as a career or crisis? Bill: It is a good career, you get to travel, visit various cities, it’s very very expensive. You need to start from the bottom up before you can drive, watch it, be part of a pit crew, you really need to understand the lifestyle, know the truck before you drive it and be prepared for a demanding schedule.
Lynda: I am someone who has always driven a truck , when I drive a regular car I feel the let down, how is it coming off the track and then having to go home in your car? Bill: It takes awhile for the adrenaline to wears off, it is a great rush. The perception of where your car will or won’t fit is definitely changed mine after all Monster Trucks fit in very tight spaces.
Lynda: Bill will you share with my readers your all time favorite memory from Monster Jam? Bill: We were on the road and my nephew who was around 11 years old at the time got to drive the mini monster with SparkPlugs the clown, SparkPlugs definitely marched to a different drummer, so when my nephew got out of the car he announced to everyone that he was going to run away with SparkPlugs and drive the gas powered truck. He is now 24 and works with the crew and we all have a good belly laugh about it to this day.
Lynda: We are going to Monster Jam this coming weekend, any recommendations you have for me and my family? Bill: BRING EARPLUGS, I never realized how loud it was till I was doing a promotion in the stands and was like WOW this is loud. Take the kids to the Pit Party, they get to see the Trucks up close, take pictures, get autographs , do the meet and greets. For me the best is the feeling you get when a kid looks at you and says WOW you drive that truck.
Lynda: Bill it was a pleasure speaking with you this morning, Thank you for taking the time today to chat with me and inform the readers of Main Street Mama. Sorry we won’t see you this weekend at Nassau Coliseum, it has been all my husband and son have been talking about for days. Bill: The pleasure was all mine, I will be at Izod Center next weekend February 1st & February 2nd, come on out and visit me there would love to meet you!
