A League Of Their Own Celebrates 25th Anniversary

A League Of Their Own Celebrates 25th Anniversary

I remember the first time my husband said to my now 10 year old “there is no crying in baseball”. Our  son then 7 looked at him confused shrugged his shoulders and walked away. We then looked at each other and laughed knowing one d,y  A League Of Their Own would make a family movie night.  Fast forward 3 years , after a day on 4 yes 4 different ball fields our family pizza movie night featured A League Of Their Own 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray.

On April 18th Sony Pictures released A League Of Their Own 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-Ray. Featuring an all new bonus featurette “Bentonville, Baseball & The Enduring Legacy of A League Of Their Own.” An unforgettable visit to the annual softball game at the Bentonville Film Festival.  The Blue-Ray also includes hilarious and insightful special features, including 15 deleted scenes , a documentary with the cast and filmmaker interviews.

About the Movie:

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this hilarious and beloved comedy, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. With baseball lineups and locker rooms empty during World War II, the newly founded All American Girls Baseball League (AAGPBL). The AAGPBL brought talented women to the big leagues and brought fans to the stands. The indomitable Dottie Hinson (Davis) finds herself leading a rag tag group of players who end up winning over the heart of their has been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). Lori Petty , Rosie O’Donnell and Jon Lovitz round out the all star roster. Based on the true story of the pioneering women who blazed the trail for generations of athletes.

As we were watching the film whose run time is 128 minutes our son had his eyes glued to the Television. He asked lots of questions about the AAGPBL , World War II and letting us know Rosie O’Donnell is hysterical.  At one point in the movie we all started to laugh.  He then said to us OHHHH that’s where it comes from! Yes you guessed it , we had gotten to that famous “There is no crying in baseball ” line.

**Disclaimer** We received a copy of A League Of Their Own 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray in order to facilitate my review. A classic will will watch over and over again.

Thunder Ridge Snow Much Fun For Everyone

Thunder Ridge Snow Much Fun For Everyone

Those of you who follow along know that we are always on the move. We try to always be busy and feel very strongly about our son being active and always trying new things.  We live in a great town and my husband and son were invited on a Father / Son ski weekend for an upcoming school break. Of course they want to go, but my husband has never skied and at 52 he is not about to start. My son is willing to try anything once especially if it means Father/Son/Friend time. We asked around and many of our friends suggested we take our son and have lessons before the big trip. My research began and I was immediately drawn to Thunder Ridge. Close to home, reasonable rates and beginner slopes where mom and dad could watch.

I am a nervous mom so I began to read the reviews and decided I would reach out to Thunder Ridge and inquire about their Ski Lessons. Meryl answered all my questions and after our conversation she recommended that we try a  Half Day Ski School .

Our lesson was scheduled to begin at 9:30 , it was suggested that we arrive early to make sure Nick was properly fitted for his ski equipment. Since he has never skied we needed to rent equipment. I will be honest I was a bit nervous what if they weren’t nice or accurate when they were fitting him? What if the equipment was old and out dated? After all this is my baby 9  years old and 5′ feet tall but still my baby…. WELL , was I beyond surprised. Not only was the staff knowledgeable they were extremely friendly. I truly believe the ease of getting equipment set the tone of the rest of the day.

Lindsey , helpful , diligent and extremely friendly

Before we knew it 9:30 arrived we reported to the ski school area and decided to walk away and let them do their thing. The kids learn some basic positions without skis on. Next it was time to incorporate the terms they had learned with the skis.  First , “french fries” , your skis are parallel and then “pizza” your skis are pointed. These are the foundation of building your ski technique. Throughout ski school they were taught new terms and continued to build the basics.

Geared Up and Ready to Ski

Geared Up and Ready to Ski

After a quick break they continued to practice riding the magic carpet to the top of the hill and skiing down. I was in such shock and awe as I watched him relax and do it with ease. My husband and I truly accredit that to Jacob who was his ski instructor for the day. When ski school was over Jacob let us know that Nick was ready to be moved up to Level 2 and we should be sure to schedule a visit again soon.

Patient and Encouraging Jacob was an Amazing Instructor

Before we left Nicholas insisted that we let him try the Level 2 mountain which we did. As he got closer to me i saw he  mumbling pizza pizza under his breath. He knew that was how he would be able to stop. As I think about that Monday morning,  I can  clearly see the smile on his face and the look of accomplishment as he came down.

We still have a few weeks before the boys big ski trip and plan to make a couple more trips to Thunder Ridge. Shhh… Don’t tell him if you see him but he has a half day next week and lessons are awaiting him.

In Transit On Broadway A Capella Musical

In Transit On Broadway

If you follow along with us on Social Media you know we are a  Broadway Family.  When Broadway Wiz reached out to us to review , In Transit  A Cappella Musical. We immediately said YES! The musical set in New York City that chronicles the lives of 11 different people.

The baseline set by Boxman (Chesney Snow), for thinking outside of the box, creates a continuation foundational heartbeat  for the entire performance and the connection between each of the characters.

In Transit is a Must See

In Transit is a Must See

The 11 member ensemble did a great job of creating the effect of a full orchestra in the non-existent orchestra pit. Each of the characters had their own individual story-line that the audience could resonate with.  Whether it is our own story, that of a friend or family member, or even just something we witnessed within society.

Ali (Erin Mackey), the girl who dropped everything and moved cross-country for a boy.
Trent (Justin Guarini) and Steven (Telly Leung), a gay couple struggling with the acceptance of their life choices from friends and family, especially from Trent’s Mom (Moya Angela).

Nate (James Snyder) the overall well liked guy who makes one mistake and everything falls out from underneath him.

Jane (Margo Seibert) the wanna-be actress who moves to NYC but lives the life of a temp to pay the bills until an audition works in her favor.

Amazing Set In Transit

Amazing Set In Transit

The show portrays lifestyles that each one of us could relate to. In Transit shows us that we are not alone in the our lifes journey.  I was able watch each character through the various obstacles of life.  Watching them intertwine  their life paths as each story-line unfolded. Sticking by one another and not giving up on your dreams, but doing what you have to, so you can do what you love. The subtle one liners , pop-culture, and everyday references kept the performance fresh and relevant.

In Transit is playing at Circle In the Square , 235 W 50th Street

#DelightfullyHonest Jell-o Is Simply Good

#DelightfullyHonest Jell-o Is Simply Good

I grew up on Jell-O, who didn’t ? It was a staple dessert in our house. Nightly we had either Jell-O Pudding or Gelatin ! When the holiday’s came my mom made a special Jell-O mold. When I was recently invited to the launch of New Jell-O Simply Good with The Moms  of course I said YES. I was #DelightfullyHonest when I shouted I have died and gone to Jell-O Heaven!

#DelightfullyHonest Heaven Awaits

#DelightfullyHonest Heaven Awaits

What’s New with Jell-O, you ask?   Well they have used Kid’s honesty as the inspiration to new flavors and recipes.  Made with good stuff like real fruit juice, vanilla beans, banana and cocoa.  Let’s not forget to mention, no artificial flavors, dyes, or preservatives. A mother’s dream dessert!

Gelatin flavors that are all Simply Good, Strawberry, Orange Tangerine, Pineapple Orange and Mixed Berry. Pineapple Orange was my favorite! New Pudding flavors are also Simply Good.  I tried all of them multiple times!  Vanilla Bean, Banana, Chocolate Caramel , and Choco Late. I must be #delightfullyhonest and admit that  I had a hard time deciding on my favorite.  Banana topped with Nilla Wafers and Blueberries (Banana BlueNilla)  or Chocolate Caramel with Pretzels and Nilla Wafers (Chocolate Carmel NillaZel) !

So Many Choices To Inspire A Simply Good Snack

So Many Choices To Inspire A Simply Good Snack

What to make with these new flavors? You can always go the traditional route and follow the directions on the package.  Feeling adventurous check out some of the great recipes online. Or If your children have a great culinary imagination , give them a variety of additions and let them inspire their own recipes. I can guarantee they’ll create a Simply Good #DelightfullyHonest dessert.

When you invite your child into the kitchen, it creates MOMents that you will cherish forever. I enjoy cooking with my son. I hope his future wife appreciates the man I am molding him to be.

CEO of Your Life

CEO of Your Life

While fast forwarding through the political posts on Facebook the other day, I came across something that someone wrote and I had to write it down. It said “Evaluate the people in your life; then promote, demote, or terminate. Your The CEO of Your Life!”

It got me thinking as recently I had written a blog post from the heart Humble and Happy  that post was my coming to terms with my recent employment situation. I had been forced out of a job I loved up until a few months prior to my resignation.

Our life as we knew it changed, my whole adult life I had always supported myself. When I got married I  contributed to 50% of our families expenses and still always had my own play money. I never had to account for what I spent nor was money an object. When I was with friends who didn’t have as much discretionary money or even those who did I always pulled out money. As long as everyone was having fun, what it cost didn’t matter.

Now  for the first time in my life I am self employed and building my own business . I have had to realize that I have friends who resent my current situation,  don’t understand it or were only friends when I was in a position to help their cause.

I enjoy being home for drop off and pick-up . I enjoy taking my son to doctors appointments. I enjoy being able to build my brand at my pace. I enjoy having playdates after school. I enjoy doing homework with my son at a decent hour. I enjoy waking up and making him lunch. I enjoy cooking a healthy meal every night (well almost every). I enjoy having lunch with a friend and taking our dog for a walk.

BUT

All of that enjoyment comes with ALOT of sacrifice. We don’t eat out often. We don’t go out on the weekends as much as we used it. We don’t or I don’t shop just because I want to. We don’t have a winter vacation booked nor do I see one in our future.

We have wonderful extended family but neither one of us comes from money.  Our parents have not been able to help us nor would we ask them to. My husband is a saver something I am not. Thankfully he had planned for me to  build my business and not being fully employed nor contributing to our expenses for 6 months (that’s quickly approaching).

Thankfully I am a planner and we had purchased tickets to many fun events before I was self employed so we are still able to do amazing things. I get invited to some great events through my blog so we are never lacking things to do. Now don’t get me wrong we are not Destitute.  We just can’t anymore because we can the way we used to!

I am never one to judge what someone does with their money they earned it. I never begrudge  anyone who has help from family , God Bless them. I give second and third chances and the benefit of the doubt when other’s didn’t. I am a friend in every sense of the word or at least I think I am.

So can someone tell me If I am CEO of my life and you are the CEO of your life ,why do we think it’s ok to resent and not support our friends? Together we are #StrongerTogether,  #BlessedWithTheBest and #SmileMore !

Humble and Happy

Humble and Happy

If you look in the dictionary the definition of Humble has many different meanings. One definition that caught me: marked by meekness or modesty, not arrogant or prideful. I had always thought I was a humble person !

I grew up in a lower income family and lost my dad at sixteen. I  worked hard to put myself through college and when I met my husband I  swore my child would struggle less than I did, he would not have student loans and wouldn’t know what it’s like to want things we couldn’t afford.

I always worked, at 13 I got a job with the local orthodontist it was he who suggested I  pursue a career as a Dental Hygienist.  His words were you can be a mom and set your own hours. Immediately following high school, I decided that dental hygiene school was worth a try. I got a job right out of college and after the first year of working full time I remember the joy of booking my first ever caribbean vacation. I have worked full-time for the past 22 years and have been fortunate to travel , we joke our nine year old has more mileage on him than my husband.

Being a workaholic has always been my nature,  I returned to work just 10 days after giving birth to my son.  I have always been a people pleaser and loved my job as a dental hygienist but I was also embarking on breaking out of the box and taking my career into other areas of the dental world. When I returned to work I moved to a management position in my office and we were starting to make some changes to bring the practice to greater heights.

I was working full-time, being a mom , we had no financial worries and I was happy, most of the time. My stress level was obscene. Although I know I created a lot of my own stress. I mean, I am a bit of a control freak. In my line of work it’s a good thing . My employer knew I would get the job done, she would have less stress and I made good money. My son was able to have whatever he wanted and not necessarily needed. We bought a home, went on vacation , had tangible items , money wasn’t an issue and after many failed secondary fertility attempts realized that we were blessed.

One day about a year ago an old friend and co-worker said to me you are not the same person you were when we worked together years ago. I was confused , baffled and looked at her with a question mark. She looked at me and said you lost who you were, you are not always smiling, your always running , your snide to people and you brag. Stunned I brushed her off and sort of severed ties with her, after all I was the same person or so I thought.

Fast forward to this past winter, After months of stress and being unhappy at work my husband and I decided that as much as I loved what I did it was time to move on. The decision was not an easy one, My salary contributed to the running of the house and our extras. We decided we could make it work, I would work on building my own business and go back to clinical hygiene. Until it all fell into place, our lifestyle would change. Was I ready for it? I don’t think one is ever ready to make life altering choices but I finally realized the stress was going to kill me. I was working hard so my son didn’t have a want or need, but if the stress killed me no one could buy him a new mother.

About three weeks after I left my job I received a call from my friend she wanted to meet for lunch. I was elated to hear from her as I missed our friendship but was to stubborn as was she to reach out prior. She had heard what happened and wanted to make sure I was alright. After having been home for 3 weeks , I had already started to make adjustments to our way of life. After a delightful lunch date, she looked at me and said I see traces of who you used to be . I looked at her and laughed and said I have been Humbled!

I won’t lie that the past 3 months have been a hard adjustment. We live on a budget, my son doesn’t get everything he wants, and  I am still looking for work.  In the past 22 years I have never had to worry about finances , the past 9 years I have never had to say NO to our son!

This past week we were invited to Delaware with my sister and her family. We had an amazing vacation. Family, Fun, Sun, Sand and lots of laughs. For the first time in weeks I didn’t cry.  For the past few months I would cry over money, cry thinking I should have lived with the stress, cry that I am letting my son and husband down. As I sat the last day on the beach I tried to think what besides my feet in the sand could have changed this past week,  my concerns were all still there. Then it hit me…

Feet In The Sand one of my favorite places

Feet In The Sand one of my favorite places

For the first time in 9 years I was actually on vacation. I wasn’t on vacation and on call. I wasn’t checking messages or stopping by the office for mail. I didn’t have to worry which Dr I would call since both  were out of town. I didn’t have to worry about payroll getting done, I was on vacation and I didn’t have to carry my phone incase the service called.  I didn’t have to worry about anything but spending time with my family! For that I have realized I am Humble and Happy!
