Thunder Ridge Snow Much Fun For Everyone

Those of you who follow along know that we are always on the move. We try to always be busy and feel very strongly about our son being active and always trying new things.  We live in a great town and my husband and son were invited on a Father / Son ski weekend for an upcoming school break. Of course they want to go, but my husband has never skied and at 52 he is not about to start. My son is willing to try anything once especially if it means Father/Son/Friend time. We asked around and many of our friends suggested we take our son and have lessons before the big trip. My research began and I was immediately drawn to Thunder Ridge. Close to home, reasonable rates and beginner slopes where mom and dad could watch.

I am a nervous mom so I began to read the reviews and decided I would reach out to Thunder Ridge and inquire about their Ski Lessons. Meryl answered all my questions and after our conversation she recommended that we try a  Half Day Ski School .

Our lesson was scheduled to begin at 9:30 , it was suggested that we arrive early to make sure Nick was properly fitted for his ski equipment. Since he has never skied we needed to rent equipment. I will be honest I was a bit nervous what if they weren’t nice or accurate when they were fitting him? What if the equipment was old and out dated? After all this is my baby 9  years old and 5′ feet tall but still my baby…. WELL , was I beyond surprised. Not only was the staff knowledgeable they were extremely friendly. I truly believe the ease of getting equipment set the tone of the rest of the day.

Before we knew it 9:30 arrived we reported to the ski school area and decided to walk away and let them do their thing. The kids learn some basic positions without skis on. Next it was time to incorporate the terms they had learned with the skis.  First , “french fries” , your skis are parallel and then “pizza” your skis are pointed. These are the foundation of building your ski technique. Throughout ski school they were taught new terms and continued to build the basics.

After a quick break they continued to practice riding the magic carpet to the top of the hill and skiing down. I was in such shock and awe as I watched him relax and do it with ease. My husband and I truly accredit that to Jacob who was his ski instructor for the day. When ski school was over Jacob let us know that Nick was ready to be moved up to Level 2 and we should be sure to schedule a visit again soon.

Before we left Nicholas insisted that we let him try the Level 2 mountain which we did. As he got closer to me i saw he  mumbling pizza pizza under his breath. He knew that was how he would be able to stop. As I think about that Monday morning,  I can  clearly see the smile on his face and the look of accomplishment as he came down.

We still have a few weeks before the boys big ski trip and plan to make a couple more trips to Thunder Ridge. Shhh… Don’t tell him if you see him but he has a half day next week and lessons are awaiting him.
