The Wizard of Oz at Westchester Broadway Theatre #giveaway

The Wizard of Oz at Westchester Broadway Theatre #giveaway

Last Night my family and I ventured just a few minutes South to see The Wizard of Oz at Westcheter Broadway Theatre (WBT). My husband and I have been to several productions at the Theatre , but this was Main Man’s first experience. In his seven years he has seen several Broadway plays. I was not sure what his thought would be to have “dinner and a play”, WELL, He loved it!

Westchester Broadway Theatre which  just produced it’s 185th musical with The Wizard of Oz is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary. This makes it  the longest running year round Equity theatre in the history of the state of New York.

Our meal which included a variety of fabulous  dining choices , offered two new choices for dinner which include Pretzel coated chicken and Bacon covered Meatloaf. Children are also able to enjoy a child friendly meal. Once we finished our dinner we sat in anticipation for the opening act. Once the ensemble appeared on stage we sat on the edge of our seats throughout the entire show. Often finding ourselves signing along.

Devon Perry who plays Dorothy Gale makes her WBT debut in this production, she was remarkably on mark from the character itself to her singing ability. Chris Kind who plays Hickory/Tinman also makes his WBT debut, you wouldn’t know it from the ease in which he played his characters. WBT returning actors Jayson Elliott and Tim Dolan , respectfully as Zeke/Cowardly Lion and Hunk/Scarecrow where amazing supporting characters to Devon Perry.

Of course there are The Wizard of Oz favorites, Auntie Em, Glinda the Good Witch, The Wicked Witch and the adorable Munchkins of Munchkin Land. Those children were absolutely fabulous and left my son wanting to know when he could audition.

Oz Ensemble

A great cast needs a creative set design along with creative lighting , sound effects and music. The Wizard of OZ hit everyone of those feats far more than I had imagined it could for this production. Glinda flew through the air, Dorothy’s house pitched during the tornado scene and let’s not forget Toto played by Nigel the dog along with his Animal Trainer William Berloni were phenomenal. Much of this better than I have viewed on Broadway itself.

The Wizard of Oz runs from now until September 21st 2014. It is a must see for the entire family. To purchase your tickets visit the on-line Box Office or visit the box office in person.

Guys & Dolls at Westchester Broadway Theatre A Must See & GiveAway

Last Night my Husband & I had the pleasure of being invited to a press opening of Guys & Dolls at Westchester Broadway Theatre .

Guys & Dolls which is set in the colorful world during the prohibition in New York City.  Is  Considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. Guys & Dolls  has one of the greatest musical scores in the history of American theatre. Including hits such as  “Luck Be A Lady”, “Guys and Dolls”, “If I Were A Bell, and “Sit Down Your Rockin’ The Boat”.

Based in New York  the city that never sleeps where The news seller ,  the chorus girl,   the gambler and the missionary,  seem to get caught up in the teeming vitality of the city streets.

Every character  from Damon Runyon’s  story has a story of their own.  Sergeant Sarah Brown , of the Save a Soul Mission, vainly trys to spread the word, and make a difference to the sin and depravity of the streets, full of tipsters, gamblers, and con men. Adelaide , the showgirl who is desperate to leave behind her seemingly glamorous lifestyle for a white picket fence and roses round the door.  And then there is Nathan Detroit , trying to find yet another new location for his floating dice game all while trying to keep just one short step ahead of the law. Let’s not forget the  gamblers themselves, eager for just one more roll. My favorite was Nicely Nicely Johnson,  something about him I related to.  All waiting for that winning streak that will keep them ahead of the game.  Sky Masterson ,  the coolest high roller of them all, who would bet on anything that would turn him a profit.

Adelaide who has been engaged to Nathan for over 14 years, learns that although she would like to change the man that she  loves that it is sometimes easier said then done.  Sergeant Sarah who falls in love with Sky comes to realize we can’t change the Guy we love,  being who he is might just be the reason why we might have fallen in love with him.

Allie Schauer (as Adelaide), Michael Brian Dunn (as Nathan Detroit), Gary Lynch (as Sky Masterson) and Courtney Glass (as Sarah Brown)

In The Heights Westchester Broadway Theatre A MUST SEE!

Since our Sometimes…You Just Need Husband and Wife Time Together Weekend both my husband and I have been going non stop. Tonight we were able to enjoy some Husband and Wife time and stepped out locally and saw  In The Heights at Westchester Broadway Theatre. It is A MUST SEE. Originally scheduled to have it’s last performance this past Sunday, In The Heights has been extended with a second run of shows through April 7, 2013.

In The Heights based on the 2008 Tony Award winning musical, weaves a tale about three days in the life of Washington Heights, a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. It’s a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music! The unique, and exhilarating score, is a dazzling array of hip hop, salsa, pop, soul, and reggae, including, “When You’re Home”, “It Won’t Be Long Now”, and “In The Heights”.

As the show unfolds, the characters and their intertwined lives are revealed. Usnavi who owns the local bodega where the locals stop each morning for their coffee and daily newspaper. When the regulars realize that a winning $96,000.00 lotto ticket has been sold at the bodega, they dream of what they would do with their winnings should it be one of them.  When Usnavi’s Abuela Claudia reveals she is the holder of the ticket Usnavi and his Abuela dream of returning to the Dominican Republic.

Abuela Claudia the neighborhood matriarch

The neighborhood is changing,  along with Usnavi closing the bodega,  The Rosario’s are selling the car service to pay for their daughter Nina’s college tuition and Daniella is moving the salon because the area rent is just too much to handle. Usnavi can save the corner if his cousin Sonny can help him see he should  stay and invest In The Heights. Will Usnavi change his mind and save their corner In The Heights?

Usnavi in front of his Bodega with a coffee ready for a regular

Growing up in a small tight knit community in Yonkers where we were the third and final generation to live, In The Heights hit close to home. You should never forget from where you come and how you got where you are. A life lesson in that parents and grandparents make sacrafices to teach us values that wether we realize it or not they are always instilled in us.

If you have not seen In The Heights  run don’t walk to purchase your tickets.   Show times include Sunday matinee (11:45) and evenings (5:15), Wednesday, Thursday , Friday and Saturday evening performances with dinner starting  6:15.  For a full listing of the remaining shows through April 7, 2013 visit the box office online or by calling 914-592-2222 to reserve your stoop In The Heights! General Admission which includes salad, dinner and dessert. Now available at a special price of $59.00 plus tax and gratuity. A night out well worth it! You will leave feeling like one of the neighbors.

**Disclaimer; Main Street Mama received 2 complimentary tickets for this review courtesy of Standing Ovation Studios. All opinions are that of my own and we had a great time. The food, the service and In The Heights were FANTASTIC. We enjoyed the show so much we even purchased tickets for our Abuela Bernice for her birthday.
